Cary John Franklin is current conductor of the Macalester Symphony Orchestra and the Macalester Symphonic Band. He is a graduate of Macalester College and received his Master of Music degree in Conducting from the University of Minnesota. He also studied at the Aspen Music School.
Mr. Franklin is a conductor of broad experience having worked extensively in the fields of orchestral music and opera. He has guest conducted the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, and the Washington Opera. He is the former Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.
Mr. Franklin is a nationally recognized composer with commissions and performances from the Minnesota Orchestra, Nashville Symphony , Kansas City Symphony , St. Paul Chamber Orchestra , Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Houston Youth Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, Dale Warland Singers , Chanticleer Orchestra, Cedar Rapids Symphony, Washington Opera, and VocalEssence.
Outside of the metropolitan area Cary John Franklin is the Music Director of the Singing Wilderness Festival of Ely, MN and the Borderline Philharmonic of the Hoot Owl Music Camp in northern Minnesota. In addition to conducting, Mr. Franklin is a Music Producer for Saint Paul Sunday, which can be heard locally on Minnesota Public Radio
Mr. Franklin is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Meet the Composer Awards, and fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and Schubert Club of St. Paul. He has also received awards for innovative programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
